Analysis of the Implementation of Moral Values in Pencak silat at the PPS SMI Marhamah Unit, Padang City

Abstract

Background: Character education plays a crucial role in shaping the moral values of students within the educational framework. In the context of Indonesia, Pencak silat, as a traditional martial art, enhances not only physical abilities but also instills positive ethical values through ongoing and structured training.

Problem and Objectives: Despite the recognition of Pencak silat as a tool for character improvement, there is still a lack of empirical data regarding how moral values are adopted among elementary school students who train in it. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate how well moral values are practiced by Pencak silat trainees at the PPS SMI Marhamah Unit located in Padang City.

Methods: A quantitative descriptive approach was used in this research. The population included 49 active trainees, from which 27 participants were chosen through purposive sampling. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire that assessed five aspects of moral values: discipline, responsibility, self-control, respect, and sportsmanship. The data that was collected underwent analysis using descriptive statistics, focusing on percentages and average scores.

Results: The study's results showed that the overall application of moral values was rated as very high, with an average score of 81.18%. The average scores for each aspect were: discipline (80.86%), responsibility (80.31%), self-control (81.61%), respect (82.04%), and sportsmanship (81.11%), all categorized as very high.

Conclusions: The results indicate that training in Pencak silat effectively blends martial arts training with character education by nurturing discipline, responsibility, self-control, respect, and sportsmanship. Consequently, Pencak silat can be a valuable means to enhance character education for elementary students in both educational and communal environments.
